LONDON - MARCH 16: A plane comes into land at Heathrow Airport on March 16, 2007 in London. A US government agency has announced that winter in the Northern Hemisphere this year has been the warmest since records began. Air travel continues to be a major source of debate; attempts to slow climate change with radical policies are being tabled by scientists and politicians. Hybrid buses, which use a combination of diesel and electric power, are said to be central to the Mayor and Transport of London's plans for a cleaner, greener bus fleet in London, and aim to start cutting the capital's Carbon Dioxide emissions helping to tackle climate change. In a year defined by uncertainty, global air travel proved its resilience. The world’s busiest airports are navigating complex geopolitical turbulence in a far more structured—albeit no less impressive—way. According to the Airports Council International (ACI) World’s preliminary 2024 rankings, the industry has soared back to strength, with nearly 9.5 billion passengers flying globally —a 9% increase from the previous year and a 3.8% gain from 2019’s pre-pandemic peak.
Despite supply chain delays and rising geopolitical tensions, many airports didn’t just hold their ground—they advanced. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport defended its crown as the world’s busiest airport, followed closely by Dubai International and Dallas-Fort Worth. Meanwhile, Shanghai Pudong made the most dramatic leap, surging from 21st to 10th place, thanks to relaxed visa rules, a rebound in international routes, and China’s broader aviation recovery. Istanbul and New Delhi also continued to impress, benefiting from infrastructure expansions and growing airline networks.
While top-tier airports account for only 9% of global passenger volume, their impact is substantial, accommodating over 855 million travelers in 2024 alone. But it’s not just about passengers; cargo operations also experienced significant gains. Air freight volumes rose 8.4% year-over-year, with over 124 million metric tons moving globally. Hong Kong International Airport held onto its top spot for air cargo, followed by Shanghai Pudong and Memphis International, as e-commerce demand, maritime delays and cheaper fuel reshaped the global logistics landscape.
Zooming in on aircraft movements, the numbers edged closer to pre-pandemic levels. Approximately 100 million takeoffs and landings occurred globally in 2024—a 4.3% bump from 2023 and a 97.4% recovery of 2019 figures. Atlanta once again led the charge, with Chicago O’Hare and Dallas Fort Worth closely behind. The Top 10 airports in this category managed over 6.4 million movements, showing signs of maturity as growth shifted from rebound to long-term expansion.
Still, challenges loom on the horizon. Economic headwinds, manufacturing backlogs and rising operating costs are expected to slow momentum in 2025. ACI World projects 9.9 billion global passengers for the year—a healthy 4.8% growth, but a tapering pace as post-pandemic surges settle into more structural patterns. Emerging markets with growing middle-class populations are likely to drive further growth. In contrast, developed markets will need to invest in infrastructure, efficiency and sustainability to meet the evolving demands of their populations.
Founded to represent and support airports around the globe, ACI World now includes over 830 members, operating more than 2,100 airports across 170 countries. Its yearly rankings, based on data from 2,700 airports, are regarded as the most reliable barometer of industry trends. The full 2024 report will be finalized in July 2025; however, this early preview confirms one thing: air travel, despite its testing, remains one of the world’s most dynamic and essential industries.
