The US State Department has recently issued a new warning for American tourists visiting Tirana, Albania.
The European capital city has grown in popularity as a bucket-list travel destination. According to the Albanian Daily News, the total number of foreign tourists visiting Albania increased to 12.47 million in 2025, a 6.6% increase over 2024. 71.5% of those travelers were said to have come from Southern Europe. Albania is renowned for its crystal-clear blue waters, where tourists can go kayaking, rafting and diving.
However, on April 1, the US Embassy urged American travelers to “exercise increased vigilance” during their vacations. The alert specifically read that “groups associated with Iran may seek to target entities associated with the U.S. or Iranian opposition elements in Albania.”
In addition, the warning further cautioned that these pro-Iran groups “may also target common venues, such as tourist sites, shopping malls, hotels, clubs and restaurants.”
As a result, the United States encourages American citizens to stay alert, aware of their surroundings, follow local media and keep their devices charged for emergencies.
As of right now, the State Department has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Albania, encouraging travelers to “exercise increased caution.” The advisory was last updated two years ago, on December 31, 2024, identifying crime as the main concern.
However, according to a press release from the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, Albanian officials claim that “there is no concrete information about a real threat to security.”
Despite the constant communication between anti-terrorism police and the Department of Public Safety and Criminal Policy, Minister of Internal Affairs Besfort Lamballari said that “there is no concrete information, even intelligence, about a real dangerous situation.”
On April 2, he added, “The fact is that Albania remains a safe country for Albanian citizens and for all those who visit Albania.”
The State Department encourages those interested in traveling to Albania to enroll in its free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). The program provides alerts and email updates from US embassies abroad, allowing prospective travelers to stay up to date.
