To travel like Douglas, make sure to put spending time in nature on the to-do list.
One of the most popular hikes near Portsmouth is Syndicate Falls. The relatively easy hike is only 15-minutes for an incredible view of the 100-foot tall waterfall. Elevation gain is minimal, so the young and the elderly are able to join in on the fun. There’s also a campsite nearby for those who truly want to immerse themselves in the outdoors. The campsite features a nearby cafe for food and drink, and don’t forget to relax in the emerald pool after hiking to the falls. There’s a small cost to hike the trail. Adults will need to pay $10 EC, while children 12-16 pay half price, and children younger than 12 get in for free.
If hiking the falls isn’t enough, travel to Cabrits National Park for another day of fun. The 1,313 acres include tropical rainforests, coral reefs and wetlands. The reefs are a destination for snorkelers and divers. There are also countless hiking trails that provide excellent lookouts to the ocean for those who don’t want to get wet. The park was originally established to protect Fort Shirley which was constructed in 1765 as a military outpost to defend the small island. Many of the barracks and other military buildings still stand, so the park is a great way to enjoy the landscape and learn more about the island’s history.
